General Motors of Canada December and Calendar Year Sales
OSHAWA, Ontario (Thursday, January 3, 2002) - General Motors of Canada dealers delivered 42,415 vehicles in December, an increase of 11.8 per cent over the same period last year. Compared to December 2000, passenger car sales for the month were 20,818 units, up 6.4 per cent, and truck sales were 21,597 units, up 17.5 per cent.
Dick Conlin, GM of Canada's vice president of sales, service and marketing, said, "GM vehicle sales for the month were our highest December sales ever as GM dealers and retailers delivered more cars, pickups, sport-utilities, minivans and cross-over vehicles than any previous December."
For the 2001 calendar year, GM Canada delivered 470,079 units, a marginal decrease from the previous year. Calendar year passenger car sales were 245,718 units, down 4.3 per cent while truck sales were a record 224,361 units, an increase of 2.9 per cent over the previous year.
Conlin added, "2001 was challenging for the overall economy but thanks to some truly innovative marketing and award winning cars and trucks, we managed to pull off a very successful year. We said all along that 2001 could be our third-best year in the past decade and we more than surpassed the previous "third best" by over 19,000 vehicles. In fact, we were less than 7,000 vehicles from surpassing our best year ever.
Highlights for the calendar year include: the launch of the innovative Chevrolet Avalanche; the launch of GM's newest mid-size sport utilities - the Oldsmobile Bravada, Chevrolet Trailblazer and the award-winning GMC Envoy; the best calendar year sales ever for GM's minivans - the Chevrolet Venture, Oldsmobile Silhouette and Pontiac Montana -- with combined sales of 59,373 units; and all-time record calendar year sales for Saab in Canada with sales of 1,710 vehicles.
