General Motors of Canada reports record revenues for 2000

OSHAWA, Ont. (January 17, 2001) - General Motors of Canada Limited reported record revenues from all operations of C$42.0 billion in 2000.

Total unit sales for GM of Canada (combined production in Canada and vehicles imported for sale in Canada) [includes domestically produced/domestically sold + domestically produced & exported + imports] were a record 1.41 million units, up from the previous record of 1.32 million units in 1999. GM of Canada produced a total of 963,438 vehicles in 2000.

In the Canadian marketplace GM truck sales were the highest ever, setting a new record at 218,129 units led again this year by the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. GM car sales totaled 256,792 units for total sales to Canadian customers of 474,921 units.

Saturn-Saab-Isuzu retailers also delivered a record number of vehicles in 2000 surpassing 1999 levels by 20% to deliver 25,257 vehicles last year.

"GM announced almost one billion dollars in new investment in Canada in 2000, including $C440 million for a new V6 engine program at the St Catharines engine plant, $C300 million to bring the next generation midsize Pontiac to the Oshawa car assembly plant and $C100 million for a new press line at the Oshawa Metal Centre," said Maureen Kempston Darkes, president and general manager of General Motors of Canada.

"We fully expect our truck leadership to continue in 2001. With the introduction of the all new Silverado and Sierra heavy duty pickups late last year, we believe we have the best and most capable pickup line in the industry," Kempston Darkes said. "It will continue to just get better from here. The all-new Buick Rendezvous, Cadillac Escalade and Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche and the Saturn VUE were recently unveiled and will be in showrooms this year. Without a doubt, when you also factor in the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy and Oldsmobile Bravada sport utility vehicles, we have the strongest truck line-up in our history.

"With the complete line of innovative new trucks and cars GM is bringing to consumers, we believe 2001 will be another strong year for GM vehicle sales in Canada," Kempston Darkes said.

Because GM of Canada's operations are rationalized across North America, GM of Canada's net profit is reflected in the reported results of General Motors North America as well as in GM's overall corporate performance.
